Arsene Wenger has revealed Alexandre Lacazette’s confidence has been jaded following the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang is now being preferred over the Frenchman after arriving at the club for £55m in January.

Lacazette remains Arsenal’s top scorer this season with nine goals. The striker who was prolific for Lyon last season is on a baron run in front of goal having scored just once in his previous 11 matches.

He was a late substitute during Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday. In the dying seconds of the game, the 26 year-old had been craving to prove his manager wrong fell to him deep into added time. However, Lacazette was unable to put the Gunners on level terms.

And Wenger believes his striker has suffered a loss in confidence in recent weeks.

The Daily Telegraph, when aseked on whether Lacazette was struggling, Wenger replied: “He has gone through difficult periods before. It can happen – it is a fraction of a second.

“Maybe the confidence is not at its highest because he has seen a competitor in for him. He created two chances – and that is a quality as well.”
