Arsene Wenger has dismissed criticism of Alexis Sanchez’s weight, insisting the forward ‘is not fat’.

Sanchez was criticised by a former Chile youth coach, who earlier in the month claimed the 28 was ‘out of physical shape’.

The Chilean has failed to register a goal or assist so far this season, but had been struggling with injury and was linked with a move away.

Wenger insists Sanchez has not lost motivation to play for the club and has dismised claims the talisman is overweight.

‘Yes, I spoke to him. He is focused, he told us he is focused on the Premier League and Europa League,’ said the Gunners boss.

‘On top of that he had a bad result with Chile against Bolivia, but he came back full of desire and ready to play.

‘He was not completely physically ready to play three games in a week – and for Chile he was not completely ready.

‘He is not fat. His fat percentage is under 10. You know how it is, when you do not win, people will find problems.’

Sanchez has less than a year to run on his current deal at The Emirates and is free to speak to other clubs from January.

The forward hit 30 goals in all competitions for Arsenal last season, but some have questioned whether he still has the passion to wear the Arsenal shirt.
