Arsene Wenger has today revealed that Arsenal were “never close” to signing Riyad Mahrez at any time.
Speculation linking the Algerian with a move to The Emirates has been on going, but according to Arsene Wenger, the Gunners were never in for the Leicester City winger.
As reported by Goal, the Frenchman said: “We were never close.
“I rate him as a player but we have similar types with Alex Iwobi, Jack Wilshere back, Mesut Ozil – we have plenty of the same type of players.”
Despite ruling out the 2016 PFA Player of the Year, Wenger has hinted his side are still working on a number of targets this summer.
He added: “We are still open.
“But of course at the moment I have currently 33 players and it is very difficult to manage on a daily basis such a high number.”
The new Premier League season gets underway on Friday and Mahrez is expected to take part for Leicester who meet Arsenal at The Emirates.
Wenger will be desperate to see his side get off to positive start – nothing less than maximum points will see Gooners go home smiling.
