Arsenal boss Unai Emery has already begun work to rebuild Arsenal’s defence.

The Gunners are reportedly closing in on deals for Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

A deal for Sokratis is understood to be in the region of £16m. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back’s move is likely to be confirmed this week.

The move will go down as Emery’s first signing, but the credit can be largely attributed to head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.

Arsenal are also trying to tie a deal for Lichsteiner. The Swiss is set to leave Juventus as he is out of contract and could move to the Emirates on a free transfer.

Stephan Lichsteiner has been capped 98 times for Switzerland

The right-back, 34, made 32 appearances for Serie A champions Juventus last campaign, as the Old Lady won a domestic treble.

Lichsteiner could be used to back up current favourite Hector Bellerin.
