Arsenal held Chelsea to a goalless draw in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final tie.

Arsene Wenger left out Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, but still deployed a relatively strong side at Stamford Bridge. Much to the surprise of many, Alex Iwobi was handed a start despite his indiscipline in attending a party prior to Arsenal’s FA Cup exit at Nottingham Forest.

After a reasonably uneventful first-half Chelsea upped the anti at the start of the second. Defender Davide Zapacosta blazed one guilt-edge header over the bar, before sending another header wide of the post.

Alexis Sanchez replaced Alexandre Lacazette in the second period, but the Chilean struggled to affect the game at the top end of the pitch.

Arsenal fans are concerned over the fitness of Jack Wilshere. The midfielder hobbled off midway through the second-half with an ankle problem. Wenger though remains confident the injury is not serious.

Part two of the tie takes place at the Emirates Stadium on January 24.
