Arsenal’s new man Alexandre Lacazette bagged himself a debut goal for the Gunners in a 2-0 win over Sydney FC.

Arsene Wenger put out a mixed side full of experience and youthful exuberance for the club’s opening pre-season game.

And it was Per Mertesacker who gave the Gunners an early lead, slotting the ball home with an acrobatic effort from close range. The 32 year-old is set to retire at the end of the season and take over as coach of the Arsenal Academy.

It was an unsurprisingly dominant display from Arsenal, who had Danny Welbeck miss a penalty and faced an in-form Sydney goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne.

There were notable performances from youngsters Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock and Cohen Bramall, who all made their senior debuts before Wenger brought on the big guns.

The Frenchman threw on six substitutes all at once in the second half, including Lacaztte.  -Wenger’s new No 9 and record signing took just over 10 minutes to make an impact.

Arsenal go to Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday. Kick off at 11am (GMT).
