Martin Keown has tipped Jack Wilshere to be the next Arsenal captain.
The Arsenal midfielder’s career appeared to be over when he was shipped out on loan to Bournemouth last season.
Wilshere suffered another injury setback in March last year when he suffered a leg break. However the academy graduate returned to the first-team in September and has gone on to make 23 appearances for Arsenal this term, including starting the Gunners last nine Premier League games.
And Keown wants to see Wilshere given the armband next season.
“I do think he should be made captain,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“He is getting an extra lift from the Arsenal supporters. He is feeling their warmth and getting more energy from them.
“He is very quickly coming back to the level we knew he could reach. Some thought he would never get close to his best.
“Wilshere is not ambling around the pitch. He looks quick, more dynamic. It shows how hard he has worked, how well he has been prepared and his sheer desire.”
The 26 year-old has just five months to run on his current deal with the club, but Arsene Wenger is confident the player will extend his stay.
Arsenal current captain Per Mertesacker is all set to step down from the role when he retires at the end of the season.
