Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez says he has talked to Arsene Wenger over a potential deal for Arsenal misfit Lucas Perez.
The Spaniard is seeking a move away from The Emirates in search of regular first-team football. Perez says he feels ‘tricked’ by Arsenal after the club handed his No 9 shirt to Alexandre Lacazette without consulting him.
The striker made just two Premier League starts after joining Arsenal last summer in a £17 million transfer from Deportivo and now Newcastle are enquiring about bringing the forward to St James’ Park.
It is suggested that the Magpies are not the 28 year-old’s preferred choice. A number of other sides are keeping tabs, including Perez’s former side Deportivo La Coruna.
At the Premier League launch today, Benitez revealed he had spoken to Wenger about completing a deal for Perez.
As reported by ESPN, he said: “I was talking with Arsene yesterday because we had the manager’s meeting and I said, ‘Listen, we have to talk.’ He said, ‘Listen, you have some money?’ I like the player but it’s too soon to talk about that.”
The Spanish boss is frustrated with Newcastle’s transfer business so far, but could start to put things right with the signing of Perez.
Gooners, now we have Lacazette, are you content with Perez leaving? Let us know in the comments…
