Arsenal’s hopes of winning one final trophy under Arsene Wenger are over.

The Gunners were beaten 1-0 at Atletico Madrid with the Spanish outfit now through to the Europa League final.

It was an old foe in Diego Costa that sealed the win for the La Liga giants. On the stroke of half-time the former Chelsea striker latched on a Antoine Griezmann through ball and fired the ball passed an outstretched David Ospina.

Arsene Wenger’s side huffed and they puffed, but they just couldn’t create a clear-cut opportunity.

Granit Xhaka’s longrange effort test Jan Oblak, but Atletico Madrid’s robust defence stayed strong.

Defeat for Arsenal means they will miss out on Champions League football for the second straight season.

Wenger, who will leave the Gunners at the end of the season after 22 years in charge, has never won a European trophy with the club.
