Arsenal are keen on signing Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez this summer.

However, according to El Gol Digital the Gunners will likely have to pay the 23-year-old’s £57.3m release clause if a deal is to be completed with the Spanish giants.

Gimenez has been impressive for Diego Simeone’s formidable defence this season. The 23 year-old has featured in 16 of Atletico’s 25 La Liga matches, of which they have conceded just 11 goals.

The Gunners have proven in recent transfer windows that they’re more than happy to splash the cash. Arsene Wenger’s side have broken their club-record figure twice this year, first bringing Alexandre Lacazette in from Lyon before capturing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

Gimenez is in line to replace at least Per Mertesacker at the back next season. However, a number of other Arsenal centre-backs could be cast out this summer. Arsenal have conceded 37 league goals so far and have fallen further behind their rivals in the Premier League.
